To Timothy B
Chapter
1
1
Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus through the will of God by way of a
promise of life in Christ Jesus, 2 to Timothy my
beloved child: Grace, mercy, peace from God our Father and Christ
Jesus our Lord.
3 I have thanks to God, whom I worship from my
forebears in a clean conscience, as I unceasingly have the
remembrance concerning you in my petitions night and day, 4 longing
to see you, having been reminded of your tears, in order that I may
be filled with joy, 5 taking recollection of the unfeigned faith in
you, which dwelt firstly in your grandmother Lois and your mother
Eunice, and I have been persuaded also is
in you. 6 For which cause I remind you to fan the flame of the gift
of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. 7 For God
did not give to us a spirit of cowardice, but of power and of love
and of self-control. 8 Therefore, do not be ashamed of the testimony
of our Lord nor of me his prisoner, but suffer ill with me
for
the gospel according to the power of God, of the one who has saved us
and has called us with a holy calling, not according to our works but
according to his own purpose and grace, given to us in Christ Jesus
before eternal times, 10 but manifested now through the appearance of
our Savior Christ Jesus, on one hand abrogating death, on the other
bringing to light life and incorruption through the gospel, 11 for
which I was appointed a herald and an apostle and a teacher; 12 for
which cause I also suffer these things, but I am not ashamed, for I
know whom I have believed, and I have been persuaded that he is able
to guard my deposit until that day. 13 Keep the pattern of words that
are sound, which you heard from me, in faith and love in Christ
Jesus; 14 guard the good deposit through the Holy Spirit that dwells
in us. 15 Know these, all those in Asia that turned away from me, of
whom are Phygelus and Hermogenes. 16 May the Lord give mercy to the
household of Onesiphorus, because he often refreshed me and was not
ashamed of my chains, 17 but when he came to Rome he diligently
sought and found me; 18 -may the Lord give to him to find mercy from
the Lord in that day- and you know very well what things he served me
in Ephesus.
Chapter
2
You
therefore, my child, be empowered by the grace in Christ Jesus 2 and
what things you heard from me through many witnesses, these commit to
faithful men, who will also be competent to teach others. 3 Suffer
ill with me
as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. 4 No one who soldiers is involved
with the affairs of life, in order that he may please the one who had
enlisted him. 5 And if anyone also wrestles, he is not crowned unless
he wrestles lawfully. 6 The laboring husbandman should partake of the
fruits first. 7 Consider what I say; for the Lord will give you
understanding in all things. 8 Remember Jesus Christ who was raised
from the dead, of the seed of David, according to my gospel; 9 in
which I suffer ill unto bonds as an evildoer, but the word of God has
not been bound. 10 Therefore I endure all things on account of the
chosen ones, in order that they also may obtain salvation in Christ
Jesus with eternal glory. 11 This word is faithful, “for if we died
with him, we shall also live with him; 12 if we endure, we shall also
reign with him; if we shall deny him,
that one will also deny us; 13 if we disbelieve, that one remains
faithful, for he cannot deny himself.” 14 Remind the
chosen ones
of these things, solemnly witnessing before God not to fight with
words, which
is
useful for nothing, except for overthrowing those who hear. 15 Be
eager to present yourself approved, an unashamed workman, cutting the
word of truth straight. 16 But shun profane empty utterances; for
they will advance to more impiety, 17 and their word will feed like a
canker; of whom are Hymenaeus and Philetus, 18 who missed aim
concerning the truth, who say the resurrection has already happened,
and overturn the faith of some. 19 However, the firm foundation of
God stands, having this seal, “The Lord knew those who were his,”
and, “Let everyone who names the name of the Lord stand away from
iniquity.” 20 Now in a great house there are not only golden and
silver vessels, but also wooden and earthen, and some to honor and
others to dishonor, that have been sanctified, suitable for the
master, that have been prepared to every good work. 22 Now flee the
youthful lusts, but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with
those who call on the Lord out of a clean heart. 23 But refuse
foolish and uninstructed questionings, knowing that they beget
fights; 24 and a slave of the Lord should not fight, but to be gentle
toward all men, apt to teach, forbearing, instructing those who
oppose in meekness, perhaps God may give them repentance for a full
knowledge of truth, 26 and they may return to soberness out of the
snare of the devil, after they have been caught by him, to
the will of God.
(MARSHALL HERE DISAGREES WITH BOTH KJV AND NIV, SAYING THAT THIS
PHRASE REFERS TO THE REMOTER ANTECEDENT OF THE SENTENCE, WHICH IS
GOD, NOT THE DEVIL.)
Chapter
3
And
know this, that in the last days grievous times will be at hand; for
men will be self-lovers, money-lovers, boasters, arrogant,
blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 without
natural affection, implacable, slanderers, incontinent, untamed,
haters of good, 4 betrayers, reckless, puffed up, pleasure-lovers
rather than God-lovers, 5 having a form of piety but having denied
its power; turn away from these. 6 For these are of the ones who
creep into houses and capture silly women that have been heaped with
sins, that are led by various lusts, 7 always learning and never
being able to come to a full knowledge of truth. 8 Now by the same
way that Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these oppose the
truth, men with corrupted mind, reprobate as to the faith. 9 But they
will not advance farther; for their folly will be very clear to all
men, as also the folly of those became. 10 But you have closely
followed my teaching, conduct, purpose, faith, longsuffering, love,
endurance, persecutions and
sufferings, which happened to me in Antioch, in Iconium, in Lystra;
what persecutions I bore, and the Lord delivered me out of all. 12
And indeed all those who wish to live piously in Christ Jesus will be
persecuted. 13 But evil men and impostors will advance to the worse,
deceiving and being deceived. 14 But continue in what things you
learned and were assured of, knowing from whom you did learn, 15 and
that from a babe you have known the sacred letters that are able to
make you wise to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 Every
scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for reproof,
for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 in order that
the man of God may be fitted, having been furnished for every good
work.
Chapter
4
I
solemnly witness before God and Christ Jesus, the one who is about to
judge the living and dead, by both his appearance and his kingdom: 2
proclaim the word, be attentive seasonably and
unseasonably, reprove, admonish, exhort, with all longsuffering and
teaching. 3 For there will be a time when they will not bear with the
teaching that is healthy, but they will heap up to themselves
teachers that tickle the ears according to their own lusts, 4 and on
one hand will turn away from the truth, on the other will turned
aside to the tales. 5 But you be sober in all things, suffer evil, do
the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry. 6 For I am already
being poured out, and the time of my departure has arrived. 7 I have
struggled the good struggle, I have finished the course, I have kept
the faith; 8 finally there is laid up for me the crown of
righteousness, which
the Lord, the righteous judge, will render to me in that day, not
only to me but also to all those who have loved his appearance.
9
Hasten to come to me shortly; 10 for Demas forsook me loving the
present age, and went to Thessalonica, Crescens to Galatia, Titus to
Dalmatia; 11 Luke alone is with me. Get Mark and
bring him with you; for he is useful to me for ministry. 12 And I
sent Tychicus to Ephesus. 13 When you come, bring the cloak, which I
left in Troas with Carpus, and the scrolls, especially the
parchments. 14 Alexander the coppersmith showed many evils to me; the
Lord will render to him according to his works; 15 against whom also
guard yourself; for he greatly opposed our words. 16 No one was
beside me at my first defense, but all men forsook me; may it not be
reckoned unto them; 17 but the Lord stood with me and empowered me,
in order that through me the proclamation might be accomplished and
all the nations might hear, and I was delivered out of the mouth of
the lion. 18 The Lord will deliver me from every wicked work and will
save me
to his heavenly kingdom; to whom be the glory unto the ages of ages,
amen.
19 Greet Prisca and Aquila and the household of
Onesiphorus. 20 Erastus remained in Corinth, but I left Trophimus
ailing in Miletus. 21 Hasten to come before winter. Greet
Eubulus and Pudens and Linus and Claudia and all the brothers.
22
The Lord be with your spirit. Grace be with you.
